Fiesta theme of annual Senior Citizens Social in Green
GREEN — On April 5, it will be fiesta time as the Green High School (GHS) chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) hosts its 13th annual Senior Citizens Social.
The social is the group’s major community service project each year, according to Green NHS advisers.
“The [NHS] is a service organization, and it is an honor to host this special event for the seniors who have given so much to the Green community,” said Kevin Finucan, NHS co-adviser. “We like to think of this as a time when seniors can catch up with old friends or, perhaps, meet some new people while having a good time!”
Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner served at approximately 5:30 p.m. For the past two years, the social has been held at Green Primary School, but this year it will return to Green High School, located at 1474 Boettler Road, in the commons. The evening will feature door prizes, a taco bar dinner, music, games and dancing. The fiesta is set to conclude at 8:30 p.m.
“The taco bar will be a great addition to our social this year,” but an alternative entrée may be requested when picking up tickets, said Doug Froelich, NHS co-adviser.
The evening’s entertainment will be provided by “Out of Sequence,” a three-piece band playing the oldies.
“For two years, the band has been received with rave reviews, and we are fortunate to have them back this year,” said Froelich.
“Since the first social 12 years ago, [the social] has become a yearly event for many of our local seniors,” Froelich added. “It is not just for married couples. Many do come with spouses, but there are plenty of singles at the event. We encourage everyone to come and enjoy a great evening.”
Kristen Starkey, co-chairperson for the event, said organizers are thrilled with the fiesta theme that was chosen this year.
“The [NHS] members really enjoy being able to spend time with local seniors in this setting, and the theme opens up some great possibilities for the evening,” Starkey said.
Although the event is free, tickets are required. They can be picked up in the Main Office at GHS during regular school hours and are available exclusively to residents of the Green Local School District until March 14. Proof of residency is required when picking up tickets. From March 17 to 21, any tickets that remain will be made available to seniors living in or out of the school district. Tickets will not be available at the door, and there are only 250 tickets available for this year’s social, according to Froelich.
“As always, the social is provided absolutely free of charge,” said Jenna Jamil, co-chairperson for the event. “We are excited to be able to host this evening for the seniors to show our appreciation for their support.”
