DOWNTOWN AKRON — WITAN (Women in Touch with Akron’s Needs) celebrated 65 years of community service recently at The University of Akron’s Martin Center with a “Hats Off” to the women of WITAN past president’s luncheon.

Shown at right top at the event are, from left, Tracie Baumgardner, Pat Bigelow and Ginger Marchetta, all of Akron, and Cheryl Dunphy, of Broadview Heights.

The event reflected on the difference WITAN has made in the Akron community, as well as honored past presidents, according to 2008-09 WITAN President Heather Jalbert.

Past presidents attending included: Ann Hubiak (1973), Linda Banasiak (1993), Beth Fink (1998), Marti Cowden (1997 and 2007), Lynne Moshier (2000), Sue Oetzel (2003), Marcia Mandala (2006), Cheryl White (2008) and Jalbert (2009).

Shown at right middle posing for a photo are Corrine Tennant, of Brecksville; Alexandra Houser Vukoder, of Akron; and Kathy Moock, of Brecksville.

Since WITAN was founded in 1943, the organization has contributed more than $1 million and more than 3 million volunteer hours to the community, according to group officials.
