AKRON — Shown above from left are Ohio State Highway Patrol Akron Post Commander Lt. Jon Ganley, Akron resident Allen Summers and Trooper Bounthan Saengsiphanh. Summers recently received a “Saved by the Belt” certificate, which is presented to those who have benefited from their decision to wear a safety belt. He also received a “Saved by the Belt” license plate bracket. Summers crashed April 17 on Interstate 77 in Summit County, ending with the vehicle he was driving upside down. The “Saved by the Belt” award is a joint effort by the Ohio Department of Public Safety and more than 400 Ohio law enforcement agencies. Provisional data from 2021 shows 565 people in Ohio were killed in traffic crashes where a safety belt was available, but not used. “Allen is a living testimony to the effectiveness of safety belts,” said Ganley. “Everyone needs to buckle up every trip, every time.”
