Boston trustees approve new zoning regulations

The Boston Township Board of Trustees approved new zoning regulations at the April 26 meeting.
Applicants who require a hearing for the Board of Zoning Appeals must now provide 20 copies of their materials, up from the previous number of 14. Also, the fee to cover the cost of a court reporter has increased from $180 to $250.
“That doesn’t count transcription,” said Trustee Vice Chair Randy Bergdorf.
In other news, the trustees discussed the relationship between bicyclists and automobile drivers in the township with Zoning Inspector Doug Mayer.
“Bikes will ride in single file, and then when a car comes, they will double up,” Mayer said. “Later, they will go back to single file.”
Trustee Chair Amy Anderson said bikes are prominent on Tuesdays and Thursdays when an Akron bike club rides through town.
Mayer said bicyclists will sometimes surprise drivers by passing them at a traffic light.
“A couple of them blew through a red light,” said Peninsula Police Officer Eddie Westfall.
In other business:
• Bergdorf said Mark Majewski, of Northstar Planning, has been meeting with the Zoning Commission and local business owners. The township hired him to work on a planning study for the Boston-Cuyahoga Falls Joint Economic Development District business corridor.
The trustees discussed a request from State Treasurer Josh Mandel to use Ohio’s online checkbook system. Bergdorf said the system helps with public records requests that deal with expenditures.
Mayer, who is also Peninsula’s mayor, noted Peninsula has used it.
Bergdorf also said the signs to discourage unauthorized vehicles from parking at the Township Hall have arrived. Cars found in violation will be towed to Twinsburg.
• Anderson said the Valley Fire District will sponsor a pancake breakfast May 7. She also said the department helped to resuscitate a man who went into cardiac arrest.
Anderson added the cemeteries look “phenomenal. I can’t remember them looking this nice.”
She commended Road Superintendent Ron Adams for his work, and he replied, “It’s quite a team effort.”
The trustees also agreed to add Adams and Mayer to the township credit card, making it easier for them to make purchases for the township.
• The trustees approved the expense of $4,000 for the purchase and installation of a new aluminum bed for the township’s big truck. The price will include the removal of the old bed, which is 22 years old.
• Adams thanked the Valley Fire District for the use of its tanker to wash out the township’s empty salt bin.
He also advised residents who are concerned about drive culverts to call him at 330-657-2600.
Brush chipping will begin on the first of each month from May to October, Adams reported. Residents should stack brush with the stick ends facing the road, but not in the road.
Adams also reported Peninsula is interested in using the township’s tar trailer when it is available.
The next Boston trustees’ meeting is scheduled for May 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Boston Township Hall, located at 1775 Main St. in Peninsula.
