Candidates, issues on General Election ballot (West Side)



SUMMIT COUNTY — The Summit County Board of Elections has released the list of candidates and issues to appear on the Nov. 8 General Election ballot.
The deadline to register to vote during the General Election is Oct. 11 until 9 p.m. The deadline to request an absentee ballot is three days before the election. If mailed, absentee ballots must be postmarked by the day before the election in order to be counted or returned in-person to the board of elections at 470 Grant St. before the close of the polls at 7:30 p.m. on Election Day. The list of candidates and issues is subject to withdrawals. Candidates seeking election to a seat begin their terms on Jan. 1, 2023 unless otherwise stated.

SUMMIT COUNTY

Candidates
• Common Pleas Court judge: with a term to start Jan. 5 – Clarissa Allega and Alison Breaux; and for an unexpired term to end Jan. 1, 2025 – Elisa Hill and Jennifer Towell;
• Domestic Relations Court judge, for a term to start Jan. 6, 2023: Kani Hightower and Susan Steinhauer;
• 9th District Court of Appeals judge: for a term to start Feb. 9, 2023 – Scot Stevenson (R) and Thomas Teodosio (D); for a term to start Feb. 10, 2023 – Donna Carr (R) and Erica Voorhees (D); and for a term to start Feb. 11, 2023 – Amber Crowe (D) and Jill Flagg Lanzinger (R);
• Summit County Council: (at-large) – vote for three: Shane Barker (R), incumbents Anthony DeVitis (R), Erin Dickinson (D), John Donofrio (D) and Elizabeth Walters (D), and Maria Williams (R); and District 6, for the unexpired term to end Dec. 31, 2024: Nick DeVitis (R) and incumbent Christine Wiedie Higham (D); and
• Akron City Council, Ward 1, for the unexpired term to end Dec. 31, 2023: Michael Andes (R), Nancy Holland (D) and Michael Bradley (D) (write -in).

Issues
• Issue 10, Akron: a charter amendment to establish a citizens’ police oversight board and the office of the independent police auditor with at least three full-time employees;
• Issue 24, Norton: a charter amendment to hold the primary election, when required, on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in May;
• Issue 32, Copley: a 26-year, $20.5 million bond issue to construct, furnish and equip a new township safety facility, with a cost of $73.86 annually for every $100,000 in property value, and collections to begin in January 2023;
• Issue 33, Copley: the adoption of limited home rule form of government; and
• Issue 3, Copley-Fairlawn City Schools: a 30-year, $50 million bond issue to renew, repair, improve and construct and add onto school buildings and facilities, with a cost of $104 annually for every $100,000 in property value, with collections to begin January 2023.

MEDINA COUNTY

Candidates
• Medina County Commissioner, for a term from Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 31, 2026: Kathy Menditto (D) and Colleen Swedyk (R);
• Medina County Recorder, for an unexpired term to end Jan. 5, 2025: incumbent Carol Brenstuhl (D) and Linda Hoffmann (R);
• Medina County Auditor, for a term from March 13, 2023 to March 7, 2027: Anthony Capretta (R) and incumbent Mike Kovack (D);
• Medina County Court of Common Pleas judge, for a term from Jan. 1, 2023 to Dec. 31, 2028: Michael Terrence and Bill Hutson; and
• Medina County Domestic Relations Court judge, for the unexpired term from Nov. 29 to Dec. 31, 2024: Pete Kirner and Julie Schafer.

Issues
• Medina County Health District: the renewal of a 10-year, 0.7 mill levy, with collections to start in 2023.
