Club accepting scholarship applications



The Sharon Board of Trustees and other township officials and residents learned about a scholarship opportunity for local students at the board’s meeting Feb. 25.
Eleanor Hammond, of the Sharon Women’s Club, announced her organization is accepting applications for the Betty J. Osborn Scholarship. She explained all applicants must be Sharon residents who are high school seniors transitioning to college or a vocational school, or current college students. She said applications are available at sharontwp.org and at highlandschools.org.
Hammond also announced the Sharon Women’s Club, in association with the Hillier Family Foundation, is accepting applications for the Highland Career Tech Scholarship. She explained current students of the Medina County Career Center who are graduating seniors from Highland High School are eligible to apply. She said applications are available at sharontwp.org and mcjvs.edu.
Hammond said both male and female students are eligible for these scholarships and applications for both are due March 31. She said a minimum of 10 scholarships will be awarded.
In other business:
• Service Director Bob Turek said he received a letter from the Ohio Department of Transportation explaining Sharon-Copley Road will be closed possibly next year between State and Burdett roads for the removal of the bridge there. He said no bid date has been set for the project yet, but added it might not be done until the spring of 2021.
• Zoning Inspector Neil Jones reported he issued permits for one single-family home, one accessory building, one pool and one conditional application since the last board meeting.
• Trustee Kimberly Bolas Miller said the Primary Election will take place March 17 and voters in Precincts A and D will vote at Sharon Town Hall, while voters in Precincts B and C will vote at the maintenance garage.
Miller announced the stuffing of eggs for this year’s Easter egg hunt will take place March 14 at 8 a.m. at the Administration Building. The board approved a motion to spend no more than $600 for the purchase of candy for the event.
• Resident Evan O’Malley expressed concerns about 3-inch holes on Osage Trail and Darcy and Katie drives that need to be filled. Officials said they will look into the matter.
Also at the meeting, the board approved the following:
√ the purchase of ice rescue equipment for the Sharon Fire Department, including ice footwear, whistles, ice screws, animal catch poles and glow sticks, for a cost of $450;
√ payment of $4,500 for the installation of audio/video equipment at the fire station; and
√ the purchase of two new tube heater systems for the fire station for a total cost of $8,500.
The next Sharon Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for March 10 at 7 p.m. at the Sharon Administration Building, 1322 Sharon-Copley Road on Sharon Circle.
