Patterson Park upgrades planned

DOWNTOWN AKRON — Improvements to Patterson Park Community Center are set to begin this fall after Akron City Council approved legislation to advertise for bids June 5.
Service Director Chris Ludle said a needs survey completed in 2019 to develop a strategic plan for community centers showed Patterson Park Community Center, located at 800 Patterson Ave. in North Hill, was identified as one of the centers in need of being rebuilt.
The city is working with PRIME AE on the project and demolition of the existing building will take place this fall or winter, with construction of the new building to begin next spring and will be completed by the end of 2024.
Council member Phil Lombardo (D-Ward 2), who represents the area where the community center is, said a community meeting about the project is scheduled for June 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the center.
Ludle said the entire project, which is estimated to cost approximately $11 million, is being funded using American Rescue Plan Act funds.
Ludle also announced construction is ongoing at Perkins Woods pool, which is scheduled to open around July 17. He said renovations at Ed Davis Community Center are ongoing and it is expected to open next spring.
In other business, Council approved a contract with Akron Public Schools to provide meal preparation and delivery services as part of the city’s annual summer food service program.
Council also agreed to move the following to the consent agenda for approval at the next meeting:
• making improvements to Belleau Wood Drive between Lafayette Drive and the northern terminus by paving, grading, constructing and reconstructing curbs, concrete sidewalks and driveway approaches and installing roof drain pipes; and
• contracts with The Ruhlin Co. for construction management services of four capital projects of the Water Division at a cost of $1.9 million; ADS Environmental Services LLC for the maintenance of flow monitoring and rain gauges at a cost of $202,080; and Timeclock Plus LLC for Aladtec scheduling software for the Akron Police Division at a cost of $195,000.
Council will next meet June 12 for committee meetings at 1 p.m. and a regular meeting at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers on the third floor of the Akron Municipal Building, 166 S. High St. The public can view the meetings on Council’s YouTube page, with a link available at www.akroncitycouncil.org.
