Three returning board members were sworn in at the first Green Local Schools Board of Education meeting of the new year.
At the Jan. 10 meeting, board members Bob Campbell and Sally Fanelly took their oaths of office administered by Treasurer Eydie Snowberger. Summit County Councilwoman Paula Prentice (D-District 8) administered the oath to Katie Stoynoff, who later said Prentice is her friend and mentor.
In his 13th year of serving on the board, Campbell was elected president for the 11th time, and Mark Herdlick will start his seventh year as vice president.
January is school board recognition month and the board members were presented with plaques, plants and treats from West Side Bakery of Green.
“This is an appreciation for what you do for us throughout the year,” said Snowberger, who was filling in for Superintendent Jeffrey Miller, who was ill with the flu.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve the community this way and work with the great administration and staff,” said Campbell.
In other business, the board approved a resolution authorizing the board to apply for an active planning process with the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission Classroom Facilities Assistance Program.
Snowberger said the district must approve the resolution to keep its place on the program’s list. Through the program, districts have been able to get assistance from the state to construct or renovate school buildings.
Campbell said the board’s resolution is not binding in any way at this time.
“We are not doing our duty as a board … if we are not prepared for opportunities that present themselves,” said Campbell.
In other business, the board approved a policy that no weapons are permitted on school property with the exceptions for emergency personnel and school lessons showing a weapon from a historical time period, said Dan Lowmiller, assistant superintendent. Permission from the building principal would be required for displaying any historical weapons, he said.
In other business, the board:
• accepted a donation of a Dynavox Mystro speech device valued at $7,000 from Martin and Stephanie Plummer to be used by Greenwood Early Learning Center’s speech department;
• approved Joya Mitchell as the interim student services director retroactive from Oct. 17 through Dec. 22, 2017;
• approved two long-term substitute teachers at Green High School;
• approved two supplemental and two classified employments; and
• approved one classified leave request.
The next regular school board meeting will take place Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m. in the Central Administration Building, located at 1755 Town Park Blvd.
