Torchbearers marks anniversary, makes awards

AKRON — Torchbearers celebrated its 20th anniversary March 9 with President Byron Delpinal showcasing the organization’s impact over the last two decades and its vision for the future. Delpinal stated recent successes include a continued emphasis on growing diversity, equity and inclusion across the organization; an expansion of leadership and development offerings; the launch of a service-based capstone model for first-year members; and the adoption of new core values — Connection, Growth and Service.
In addition, Cathryn O’Malley (Class of 2015), CEO of United Way of Summit & Medina, was honored as the Distinguished Alumni Award recipient. She is involved with various local events and organizations. Also, Doug Piekarz, president and CEO of the Akron Zoo, received the Read Family Friend of Young Leader award. Under his leadership, the zoo has created a pipeline for young leaders to give back in meaningful ways, including paths to board service and launching the Professionals Advocating for Wildlife (PAW) group for young leaders to fundraise specifically for worldwide conservation.
