Copley High School students earn Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

COPLEY — More than 100 pieces of artwork from Copley High School students were submitted and 56 of them were recognized at the recent Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a recognition program for creative teens in grades seven through 12.
The categories in which awards were made included: architecture, ceramics and glass, comic art, design, digital art, drawing and illustration, editorial cartoon, fashion film and animation, future new (work that challenges category boundaries and explores unconventional, interdisciplinary, or forward-thinking mediums), jewelry, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture and video games. This year, nearly 340,000 works of visual art and writing were submitted to the awards program and around 90,000 pieces of artwork were recognized at the regional level and will be celebrated in local exhibitions and ceremonies.
School officials stated high school art staff reviewed the students’ artwork and chose entries for the regional competition based on originality, quality and technique. Copley High School students earned the following awards:
• Gold Key: Emily Shaffer, Elena Toscidis, Laurel Chang, Jenna Karlovec, Shannon Pusateri, Olivia Vasilatos, Carlos Vincent Jr. and Virginia Williams.
• Silver Key: Mattison Cavanaugh, Makenzie Dijak, Rebecca Kilmer, Elena Toscidis, Caitlin Farkas, Kaitlin Kemp, Calle Lanza, Thomas Lillard, Parker Ohlin, Hannah Oldham, Maria Signorino and Gabin Vernon.
• Honorable Mentions: Michaela Barnett, Mattison Cavanaugh, Laurel Chang, Jenna Karlovec, Jordon Kemp, Kaitlin Kemp, Esther Lee, Kelly Peterson, Isabel Rodriguez, Emily Shaffer, Luke Supelak, Virginia Williams, Ethan Bowers, Vivian Brown, Laurel Chang, Azrin Dowla, Caitlin Farkas, Marissa Harris, Bridget Milligan, Parker Ohlin, Hannah Oldham, Sarah Ridings, Abby Sears, Sydney Selby, Maria Signorino and Olivia Vasilatos.
“At Copley High School, our students, art teachers and Art Club members work to create an environment that encourages and celebrates the arts,” said Laura Addis, a visual arts teacher with Copley-Fairlawn City Schools. “Our students are excited and motivated to compete at the local and national levels. We are so proud of how well they performed and how dedicated they are to their craft.”
